Goddamn Cheetah—in progress

No apple yet, but this is what I came up with for a recent art therapy assignment. I was to try to think of something/one that is doing what it's supposed to be doing (is making a valid choice, is not making a mistake) by not being urgent, by resting. Well, big cats spend most of their time resting. They expend energy in bursts to take down prey, but other than that, they sack-out most of the time. And that's what they're supposed to do. Thats them being what they are. Being that way is valid. So I was to do an image about that. But did I make the image of a figure at rest? OF COURSE NOT! SMH.

So now my assignment is to show her at rest. What does it take for her to be at rest? Well, I can tell you right now she'll be up a tree.

Analog self-portrait finished

So I'm editing this after the post date and am realizing there's no apple here. I just have done so many and I didn't really want one in this. I've done so many pieces like the right side of this one tho, with waves and an apple down low in them, that you know you can imagine it there.  Let's just pretend it's dipped under a wave at the moment of this image. It's there, you just can't see it. :)

Vs.  digital painting (which has an apple even though it's not in frame here)

Char + apple

3D piece today. I made this to submit for the Maryland Federation of Art’s juried exhibition “Eye Of The Beholder,” which requires that artworks be made from found objects.

Char—Depression Warrior 15-year Campaign Diary

(Media: kindling + partially consumed birch branch, acrylic)

Each twig was selected and intentionally burned and painted before insertion into drilled birch branch, also painted to resemble still-burning embers. Each twig memorializes a particular year from 2005–2021.

04/15/2021 Frustration

Futzed with this more today and still am not there. I mean, it’s completely reworked, but I’m still not satisfied with my understanding of how to do these ripples. We’ll get there eventually.

4/13/21 Lake

More progress on this piece: I refined and leveled the cottage and dock, added people. This is a real place, from my memory. My grandfather built this (no longer extant) cottage where I spent childhood summers. In the Poconos (PA, USA), the ground is littered with boulders and smaller rocks, left behind by the glacier that covered North America during the last ice age. The dock rests on two of these. Another sits out in the water, and is where we used to bathe. I learned to swim off the rightmost rock of the dock and spent plenty of time swinging in hammocks, catching frogs, fishing, and playing flashlight tag at night. I get quite choked-up contemplating this image. I may refine it a bit further. The apple is on the dock.

03/31/2021 Anniversary

This is one of five abstract pieces I am doing to submit for an exhibition by Krealyx.com.
